It is with great sadness that we tell you that we had to euthanize one of our most loyal and best friends today. For those of you who didn't know, Koa had been battling cancer for the last four months. We have had external tumors removed from him over the last few years, but he developed a tumor in the lymph node area on his neck. When the vet did a biopsy, there was way too much blood, and the vet was afraid to operate because he felt the tumor had grown around the jugular vein, and it was too risky. He estimated that we had six months to spend with Koa. Only two months after that, another big tumor developed in the roof of his mouth. The vet said we could remove it, but we would have to remove most of Koa's jaw, as well as half the side of his muzzle. Even if we put Koa thru the surgery, the prognosis was bad because of the other tumors that were rapidly spreading thru his body. A couple of weeks ago I had set the date to euthanize him as he was lethargic, and his eyes were not the typical happy dog we all know Koa to be. Then, he actually felt better, and was acting like he didn't have a care in the world. I took him on a couple of walks, he played with some puppies, and was running around the back yard trying to breed Trevie. Unfortunately, it was short lived, and over the last 24 hours his condition worsened dramatically and I had no choice but to put him down so he wouldn't suffer. It is one thing to lose one of your most loyal and best friends, but it is even harder when you have to make the decision to actually end his life. We are heartbroken, even though I know it was the right thing to do, and we know that we will probably never have another dog like Koa, he was truly one in a million...
For those of you who didn't know Koa, here is a brief history:
Dual Champion Souza's Koa of Boyd BST OFA Ph GDT CGC ( 7/27/96 - 3/24/07 )
Koa was four months short of his eleventh birthday. He sired 27 litters, producing well over 200 offspring. He was a conformation Champion in both the ABA and ABNA. He had a WABA BST, was OFA fair, had a PennHip of .39/.39, as well as an Irondog GDT and his CGC. He was truly a GREAT producer, the sire of multiple Grand Champions, Champions, BST Titles, Schutzhund Titles, Irondog Titles, Weight Pull Titles, and Hog Catching Titles. His temperament was unbelievable, and he made friends with everyone. His working ability and drive were also unbelievable, although cut short due to compression injuries to his spine from being jammed by decoys that weren't quick enough to catch him properly. Koa is a huge part of my breeding program, as well as several other breeders that realized what a great dog that he was, and he will be missed greatly.
I don't know if there is a dog heaven or not, but if there is, Koa is running around doing his favorite things, eating, knocking decoys on their asses, and chasing around some fine American Bulldog bitches.
